Treated wood means wood that has been treated with a chemical preservative for purposes of protecting the wood against attacks from insects, microorganisms, fungi, and other environmental conditions that can lead to decay of the wood, and the chemical preservative is registered pursuant to the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (7 U.S.C. Sec. 136 et seq.). These preservatives often include one or more of the following constituents: arsenic, chromium, copper, pentachlorophenol, and creosote.

On August 31, 2021, Governor Newsom signed California Assembly Bill (AB) 332 and the law took effect immediately. AB 332 established new Alternative Management Standards (AMS) for treated wood waste. As a result of AB 332, all treated wood waste variances issued by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) since March 2021 are now inoperative. The variances are no longer necessary because they have been replaced by the AMS.  

Treated wood waste may be accepted at the Recology Yuba-Sutter Transfer Station in Marysville with the generator’s identification number, or, if the generator does not have an identification number, the name, address, contact person’s name, mailing address, and telephone number is provided when dropping off the material.  

Please note: Treated wood waste must be separated from fencing panels and construction and demolition debris loads (i.e.,: place treated wood waste on top of load).
